Wool & Sheepskin

Tanning of Sheepskin hides is a necessary and involved process. Most tanneries only produce sheepskins that are dry cleaning only. Some other tanneries produce sheepskins that can be hand washed in cold water or dry cleaned. And now, there are a few tanneries in Australia that produce the " Australian Medical Sheepskin ASD4480-1 1998" These select tanneries, use a formulation developed by the CSIRO. This tanning process produces a sheepskin that can be washed in water up to 80 degrees celsius without shrinking and is Urine Resistant.

Australian Medical Sheepskins are generally described as:

  • LowTemp Medical Sheepskins- wash in cold water with Woolskin- not for incontinent use: NOT Urine Resistant
  • HiTemp Medical Sheepskins- can be washed in 80 degree Celsius water with Woolskin - not for incontinent use: NOT Urine Resistant
  • HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskins- can be washed in 80 degree Celsius water with Woolskin - recommended for incontinent clients.  Urine Resistant

Lambswool products are made from wool shorn from the sheep and knitted into a backing material using the sliverknit process. This results in a very soothing pile with excellent washability. These products can be safely dried in the dryer. Some products have a waterproof, breathable backing.

Down-Under Wool recommends that you wash all washable sheepskins in Woolskin. Woolskin will condition the leather together with cleaning  and disinfecting the wool.
