How to clean and take care of your sheepskin properly. Is there a way to keep your medical sheepskins looking and feeling as good as new?

Medical Sheepskin is durable, therapeutic and simple to maintain. Knowing that very few things last forever, your Medical Sheepskin, if cared for correctly, will continue to look luxurious, have therapeutic value, feel comfortable, and be supple for many years.

Cleaning sheepskin is not difficult. The leather backing  and wool are complex materials, and cleaning both at the same time without damaging them can be tricky. This blog will describe how to take care of and maintain your Medical Sheepskins.

Care Tips For Your Sheepskins

The general cleaning and washing procedures for your sheepskin and other sheepskin products are provided below so that you may keep your lambskins in pristine condition for an extended period of time and avoid ruining them.

  • Always follow the washing directions that come with your sheepskin products, because product vary in the tanning process used.
  • Keep your natural sheepskin products out of direct sunlight to preserve their finest qualities - UV radiation can harm tanned hides and fade coloured fabrics.
  • We recommend spot cleaning for minor spills- use a damp cloth and dry with a towel.

Cleaning And Maintaining Your Sheepskins

The natural Lanolin in sheepskin coats and lubricates the wool fibers, making it more difficult for dust, dirt, and liquid to adhere to them. As a result, your Medical Sheepskin will be easy to clean and prevent soiling. It follows that it probably does not require as frequent washing as you may think. Wash when it becomes "smelly".

You should regularly brush the fibers with a nylon hair brush to lessen felting and bring back the bounce of the wool fibers. In addition to brushing, you should shake your sheepskins often to remove loose dirt and dust.

See below, for further cleaning and maintenance suggestions for your Medical Sheepskins. Follow these methods and tips to keep your sheepskin products and overlays looking new.

Spot Cleaning

With stains from acidic substances, such as acidic foods, liquids, poop, and vomit, you will need to act quickly because the material may enter the wool pile and change its color. Thus, immediately soak up any fluids with paper towels or a damp cloth and pick any solids using a dull knife, spoon, or spatula.

Spot-clean a stain by gently rubbing it with a warm, damp cloth and a moderate soapy solution (mix woolskin with water). Woolskin will disinfect the affected area. In order to prevent the cleaned patch from becoming more evident than the rest of the product, blend the edges outwards. Afterwards, wipe dry with a clean, moist cloth.

Washing

When your Medical Sheepskin requires washing and disinfecting, the secret to success is using the proper type of detergent. Our wool wash called WOOLSKIN, is free of enzymes that could harm the wool fibers and the leather backing.

Hand washing is the advised method used to clean sheepskin. Use 50mL of Woolskin / kg of sheepskin to clean and disinfect a Medical Sheepskin. Use warm water and double rinse.

However, you can machine wash your Medical Sheepskins now.- check the product tag on the sheepskin. If you decide to machine wash, use a front-load washer or a top-load washer, cold water, WOOLSKIN detergent, and the gentle cycle for best results. Matted and felted fibers might result from overly vigorous agitation.

After washing the sheepskin, double rinse it for best care. Spin dry in the washer to remove most of the water. Then, hang it from a drying rack or on the back of a chair, to allow the sheepskin to air dry. It will usually take about 24 hours to air dry. Remember! a lambskin or sheepskin should never be left in direct sunlight, or near a radiator to dry. When the sheepskin is completely dry, gently brush with a nylon hair brush to unmatt fibres.

To Remove Odors

If the sheepskin smells stale, sprinkle some dry baking soda on it. It can be combed in or worked into the strands using your hands. Give the baking soda at least two hours, preferably overnight, to sit on the lambskin. Then, shake or vacuum the Medical Sheepskin to remove the baking soda and use a brush to restore the pile.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming will get rid of dirt and dust from large Medical Sheepskin rugs and overlays. However, it would be best to use only primary suction because brush heads that rotate and turbocharge can be excessively abrasive on the fibers and tangle them.

Summary

Sheepskin requires almost no maintenance, so you can keep enjoying all the advantages of this great natural fiber. Just like we all get old eventually, your Medical Lambskins will too, but if you follow our care instructions, it will happen gradually and gracefully. This way, sheepskins can last you a very long time if you take good care of them.
