Australian HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskins were introduced to the medical world in 1998. They were developed to respond to the need for a dense pile fine Merino wool fleece that could be:

  • washed and disinfected in hospital and commercial laundries
  • used over and over again
  • used for incontinent clients without breaking down

The research for the development of the  Australian Medical Sheepskin was conducted by the C.S.I.R.O under the direction of Dr. Ken Montgommery. The tanning, laundering and manufacturing industries worked closely with the CSIRO and Standards Australia. The patented tanning process was then licensed to a few tanning companies in Australia.

Critical Aspects of the HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskin:

  • Leather:  Neither novice nor expert can visually determine whether a raw salted sheepskin will survive repeated washing at 80 oC. The only method of achieving the standard is to tan and test the product.
  • Wool:  Wool type, wool fibre length and finish are important criteria used for the initial selection of the sheepskin at the tannery.
  • A medical sheepskin claiming compliance with the Australian Standard ( AS4480.1) requires that a stamp be permanently attached to the leather side of the sheepskin. If the stamp is not present, the sheepskin is an imitation and will not have the same properties.

Now that the criteria established by Standards Australia are now in place, users can be assured that HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskins can be laundered many times ( guaranteed for at least 50 washes in Woolskin) and achieve the high level of disinfection that is need to meet hospital infection control standards. This is very important for incontinent users. Most sheepskins will break down in the presence of urine and faeces. These specially tanned sheepskins are UR ( Urine Resistant ), making them the recommendation for incontinent users.

Authentic Australian medical Sheepskins have been shown, in clinical trials, to reduce the possibility of developing pressure sores by 58%.

The wool characteristics will maximize pressure relief and moisture absorption at the same time as well as reducing shear...the 3 major factors that cause pressure sores.
